A Beach Getaway
Block Island is a resort town located off the coast of Rhode Island. A favorite vacation spot for sand and surf lovers, the island is home to seventeen miles of white sandy beaches open and free to the public. There are lifeguards and free parking at every beach.
Explore the Bluffs
The beaches of Block Island are edged by beautiful rock and clay bluffs great for the outdoor enthusiast. Hiking the bluffs is free. If hiking isn’t your thing, you can rent a bicycle or moped for guided tours of the island. There are also horseback rides through scenic Rodman’s Hollow.
A Bit of History
The island has a strong maritime history. A visit to the Block Island Historical Society Museum will clue you into how Block Island fits into American history. Their focus ranges from the early Native Americans who called the island home to Victorian New England era.
The North and Southeast Lighthouses are also popular historical attractions. From the Southeast Lighthouse, you can see the wreckage of a 19th-century ship that crashed into the hidden rocks off the coast. Guided tours are available for $15 per person.
Have An Adventure
It’s a little-known fact that during WWII a German submarine was destroyed off the coast of Block Island. Today, the sub is a popular dive location. The compromised hull allows for divers to enter the U-853 and take a look back in time.
Layman divers should not attempt to enter the vessel as tight corners make the dive a challenge. Also take note that the site is a commemorated war cemetery. While scuba diving the wreckage is perfectly legal, removing items or tampering with the remains of the fallen sailors entombed in the sub is strictly prohibited. Violators will be prosecuted.
