Known for its friendly people, pristine beaches, and vast jungle, Fiji is the dream vacation for many travelers. It’s actually easy to get to an island in Fiji from the United States. What most people find a little challenging is exploring the other islands in the archipelago once you get there. Luckily, inter-island travel is safer and easier than ever before. The main choice is price versus comfort. Keep in mind that none of the commutes between islands are very long, but you will need to make the choice between public transportation, shuttles, and taxis. Taxis tend to be more expensive and difficult to flag down whereas the public transportation and shuttles are typically cramped.
Fiji is called the “Soft Coral Capital of the World,” and for good reason. This stretch of reef spans 1.3 million square kilometers and is home to a plethora of aquatic life. The reef is also the most diverse in types of dives that can be done in the area. Parts of the reef are more gentle and best for beginners. Other parts are too shallow to dive, but are great for snorkeling. Some of the reef is for expert divers only with strong underwater currents and animal life. Diving schools, equipment rental places, and transportation is a dime and dozen and readily available on all the islands.
Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park
This was Fiji’s first national park and it an extreme point of pride of the Fijian people. Trekking through the park takes between an hour and two hours. You’ll be accompanied by a guide who can tell you all about the history and culture of the area. You can even join a program for the day to help replant indigenous foliage in the park.
