Featured Locale: Lake Placid, New York

Searching for a vacation? Find travel inspiration with Featured Locale. Let us introduce you to your new favorite vacation spot below.

About Lake Placid

Contrary to movie belief, there are no alligators here. The lake is clear, clean, and an excellent place for all of your outdoor water sports. Lake Placid is rimmed by mountains and dense woods, so think about visiting in fall when the leaves are changing color for a breathtaking sight. Winter is lovely in upper New York State, too. Simply replace your outdoor water activities with skiing, tobogganing, and snow tubing.

Adirondack Scenic Railroad

The train runs the old New York Central Railroad line from Utica to Lake Placid. These days, it’s mostly just a tourist track, a not-for-profit organization attempting to bring the beauty of the railroad and New York state back to the public. This activity is best when the leaves are changing—be sure to book your ride early as seats fill up fast. This year, as of March, 2017, all seats are already booked for the following autumn, and for that reason, ticket prices are not available. Uihlein Sugar Maple Research Center/Field Station

They make some of the best maple syrup in the state here. Touring the facility is a little wonky because they don’t have set tours aside from the big maple weekend they put on at the end of March. If you find yourself in the area in any other month then March, stop by anyway. There is a gift shop filled with maple items you can’t get anywhere else and the park rangers are very knowledgeable and courteous, often taking impromptu visitors on tours of the maple production even outside their tour season.
