This resort community is right on beautiful Lake Chautauqua (or Chautauqua Lake, if you’re a local) and is home to some of the best scenery in the southern tier of New York. Fall is a great time to find yourself in this area. All of the wineries will be operating for tours and tastings and the apple festivals are some of the best in the country. For the snowy months, tryout one of the many ski lodges and ice fishing spots found here.
Lucille Ball Museum
Jamestown is a short fifteen minute drive up the road and is well worth the trip to see the I Love Lucy museum. Anyone that enjoys comedy, 1950’s life, or just loves Lucy will get a kick out of these attractions. Allow yourself about ninety minutes to see all of the attractions. Stop by the real-life set exhibits from the sitcom and peruse the artifacts taken from the show. Since Jamestown is Lucy’s hometown, there is a whole division dedicated to her early life. Listen to accounts from those that knew her well and view pictures from her early childhood. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for children. Hours are strict, open 10 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday-Saturday. On the other side of the lake, you’ll find a gated community that looks way too magical to be real. To hear them tell it, the people who live at Lilly Dale, it is. Featured on Ghost Hunters, Supernatural, and as the setting of numerous popular fantasy books throughout the ages, Lilly Dale is considered the premier residential place for mediums, healers, and spiritualists in the United States. Residents must pass a test from a special panel before they are allowed to be in residence. Visitors, however, can pay a gate fee of $15 to spend the day and evening within the village.
There is fishing, boating, and swimming on the lake, of course, as well as village-wide medium demonstrations and healing workshops. Along the brick pathways in this fairytale village, you’ll see the residents have hung shingles specifying what their gift is, automatic writing, mind-reading, precognition, parapsychology, etc., and how they can help you. There is also a museum and talks given by officials of Lilly Dale. This is a unique vacation idea that few ever get to experience.
