About Rockaway

Rockaway is a tranquil beach resort town on the coast of Oregon. There’s a lot to see and do in this idyllic little area starting with the intense railroad history and ending with the awe-inspiring beaches and rock formations. It’s popular to fly kites on this beach, whale-watch, and play in the tide pools. Be sure to stop by and take pictures of the Octopus Tree, Neahkahnie Mountain, and Three Capes Scenic Loop—these sites are not to be missed.

Tillamook Cheese Factory

Actually, it’s ice cream and cheese. What more can a foodie traveler ask for? Currently, the factory is in a transitional period as they build their new visitor center, but the facility is still open for touring and tasting, while they’ve also erected a temporary visitor’s center is satisfy the museum side of the tour. This is a fun and inexpensive way to spend the day. Tours are free and souvenirs are fairly priced.

You’ll get a bird’s-eye view of the production process as well as the history of the enterprise of dairy in the Pacific Northwest. Be sure to try the Tillamook Cheese Curds or “Squeaky Cheese” as the locals call it for the way the fresh curds squeak against your teeth. The new visitor’s center will open in 2018. This is a great activity to do with the whole family at Rockaway Beach. If you’ve never been beachcombing, here’s how it works: Go to a stretch of beach you like early so you can beat the other treasure hunters to the goods. It’s smart to get a chart of the times of the tides so that you know when the water will come back it (remember things get washed up too!).

Take a bag for your treasures and a bag for trash. Part of the experience it helping to keep the beaches pretty and safe, so if you happen to see some litter, go ahead and pick it up. From there, look for shells, fun rocks, polished glass, and any other pretties that have been lost or left behind. There are metal detectors available in the area for rental, if you like. Feel free to keep whatever you find, however, above all, make sure to leave the animals and wildlife alone. Turn your treasures into personalized gifts for family and friends!
